PostSubject: [Guide] Getting the most out of a guild   Mon Sep 20, 2010 10:07 am

Topics:
1: Introduction
2: The Importance of a guild in an MMORPG
3: What you should do and not do
4: Closing

1) Introduction
------------------

My Name is Praetor, or in RL: Minsoo Kang. I joined Sovereign a few month back, on the 2nd day of the Heroes of the three kingdom closed beta. I followed through with the guild through closed and open beta of the game, but unfortunately I got sick and had to take two months time off to recuperate. One thing I liked about Sovereign is the closeness everyone seemed to share with everyone (back in the day where there were only about 90 members). One thing people remark about our guild that is different from other guild is that we view each other not as simple "team" but rather as part of a family. I think new people still get that feeling from our guild. The reason why I'm writing this is because I have noticed that some people seem to be joining and leaving guild without ever getting to know anyone or talking to the people that is part of sovereign, so I wondered if they understood what a guild stands for. In hopes that people will try to taste a fuller experience what a guild can provide in a game, and in my rather selfish attempts to try and convince others that this is what a guild should be, Here I write a guide on how to get the most out of a guild. Please enjoy.

2) Importance of guild in MMORPG
----------------------

As everyone should already know, MMORPG stands for massively multiplayer role playing game. There's lots of different types of MMOs, but MMORPGs are special in that beyond being a game that is played by others; there are role playing elements (of course) which sometimes include nations, factions ect. Some people play MMORPG just to get to the highest level, and to get the best equips and skills, while others want to play MMORPG to live out their fantasy lives interacting with other people in a brand new world. One or another reason is not more important then the other. People should recognize, however, that one person might have different reason to play MMORPG then the other, so we should be understanding when people come and go to join guild that suits more their style of play. Guild can provide many things for any type of player, whether it provides team mates to go help quest and level up faster, or find others with similar interests in role playing and develop a close knit community. A person doesn't necessarily have to be completely one type of gamer, since most people are mixture of both hard core and fun seeking type of gamers. But the reason why a guild is important is when there are castle seiges/nation wars ect, you want to be around people you are comfortable being around. After hitting the level cap, and after the guild maxes out on the limit of the people, the only distinguishing aspect between guilds would be how much you enjoy being around the people in the guild. From my experience, initially it is nice being in a hard core guild because of how fast you can level, but after a while, it gets tiresome and boring because people don't communicate. To enjoy the game, you have to be around people that makes the game enjoyable. If all you do is level and then log off, not caring about forming friendships and bonds with other people, then being in a guild is only as good as keeping a large friendlist. The whole point of playing an MMORPG is to interact with other people, otherwise there is no point playing MMORPG over single player RPGs with rankings.

3) What you should do and not do
----------------------------------------

The end goal of a guild is to make an MMORPG experience more fulfilling. There is nothing more frustrating then a person who joins a guild, then refuses to do anything with the guild members, then later complain that the guild doesn't provide anything for them, and leave to join "more powerful guilds". How can a guild offer you anything without you having interacted with the guild and talking to the people that make up that guild? Take the first step and TALK to people. Why be invisible in a game where the whole purpose and design was to allow people to interact while playing a game? I've been in many games and I've seen many many guilds. There are almost no guild like Sovereign and the people that are in it. Take advantage of your good fortune and get to know the people. You probably won't regret it. Even if there is someone you don't like, you can bring this to the leadership and then we can try and make things better. Nothing is going to improve by not saying anything and harboring malevolent feelings. The worst thing you can do in a guild is tarnish the reputation, but the second worst thing you can do is staying invisible. The reason why I stick with sovereign even though heroes of three kingdom is no longer being played is because I realize how special this guild is. There are 300 people yet most of those people have 0-10 posts. If you joined the guild, take a chance and start up a conversation. There's nothing to lose.

4) closing
--------------
I'm not part of the leadership and I'm not among the oldest member of the guild, but I deeply love the guild and the people that are part of it. It pains me that some people treat this guild like nothing more then a tool and never give it a chance to grow on them. Sorry for ranting so long, and hopefully, you'll come to enjoy Sovereign as much as I have.

As you said yourself, you were not here for a big time. So, you match the join time/post count requirement but since you were not there you could not show us your contribution to the guild. But with this topic you've made a start, so keep it up and we'll see what the future holds Wink

Veteran position is not power. It is recognition Smile So on that note, you can still desire that position if you want and work for it, as its not 'power'.

Older than me? Well, if you can wait for about ~3 months we can fix that..Razz

wow.. that's a very nice post. For some reason I missed this post back when it was written. Probably because the neutral grounds aren't as active as the other parts of our forums.

well as the others said a few months ago this post is very nice and true. Also Zeifod is right, every new member or every person that thinks about joining us should read this.

Ohh man , now this is really bringing back memories of old days. As all the people above i agree with your thoughts but i personally give more attention to the "interact" part and not being invisible. That is something really important for a member of any guild

Really well writen
